New Seasons Bring New Ideas

“I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” Philippians 4:13

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9

“You are my friends if you do what I command.” John 15:14

“For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.” Psalm 91:11

These are all verses some of my girls chose to learn and memorize. In English! What great truths to start out the year! Reminders of the power, strength, friendship and protection of our God.

Right before Christmas, a few of my girls had approached me to ask if I could teach them English. We began a small class, starting with with the alphabet and the “Hi, how are you?” conversations before the Christmas vacation. Now, we are going a little deeper and using Bible verses to make that happen. Each girl brings a verse for everyone to memorize in English and then she gets to explain it in Spanish before we discuss it as a group. It’s so simple yet so valuable, and not only for them!

I was able to travel to the states the beginning of this month. On the many flights it takes to get from Honduras to Montana, I had plenty of time to reflect back on the past year and think about what the next season held. Lesbi and I have had the opportunity to be involved in three different girls’ homes, meeting and getting to know many precious girls. We’ve been able to spend time studying God’s Word as well as just hanging out and having fun with them. I’ve been able to get connected with 6 girls in the bordos and do personal discipleship classes weekly. God has been so faithful and continues to work in ways we don’t even know.

New seasons bring new ideas, new plans and fresh perspectives.

Looking forward into this new season, a thought came to my heart and mind: I am not always going to be there for my girls, encouraging them to pray and read their Bibles, asking them about memory verses, or asking them what God is teaching them. It’s time to dig deeper. I can continue to feed them, but they also need to learn how to feed themselves.

What we had been studying was good; there were many great truths from the study books we were using, but it was time to go deeper, in a simpler way. I wanted to go from just pouring into the girls, to teaching them to embrace studying God’s Word on their own and truly seeking Him to make their faith more real and applicable to their lives. They do not have the resources and books that we were using or have the means of getting new ones, but they do have their Bibles. That is our plan, plain and simple. We have our Bibles, our pencils and notebooks and hearts open to learn. I’m excited to see how God is going to work in this new season!

“For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.”

Romans 15:4

Thank you for your continued prayers! Please continue praying for open hearts with a desire to learn more about God.
