Letters from the Field – The Slow, Holy Work of Discipleship || Alishia Weeks
Dear Sparrow Family,
One of the greatest gifts of long-term mission work is getting to witness not just beginnings, but becoming.
On Monday, February 2, something deeply meaningful happened at Sparrow Academy. Two of our former students, young women who first walked through our doors as little girls, officially began serving as teachers’ assistants. Angely and Lissy graduated from Sparrow Academy this past December and are now stepping into their next season: beginning college while serving here as interns.
As our new school year was beginning at Sparrow Academy, the classrooms were once again full of energy, small voices, and wide eyes. And now, standing at the front of those rooms, were these two young women who were once students themselves, now leading, helping, and loving the next generation.
Watching the younger children look up to them has been incredibly moving. Their presence is a physical representation of leadership, perseverance, and hope. They are living proof to our students that what they see modeled here is not just for a season; it’s something they can grow into. Their lives now quietly say to the little ones, “This could be you someday.”
These young women have been discipled faithfully over many years. Karla and I have had the privilege of walking closely with them in recent seasons, but their story is the result of a much longer journey. From the early days with Elena, Ashley, and Claudia, to the steady investment of Margie, Karely, Marcela, Olguita, and now Karla and myself. This is the fruit of many faithful yeses from many faithful servants.
This week, alongside these two young women, we had the opportunity to visit two teenage girls who are currently pregnant and walking through very dark and vulnerable circumstances. Watching our former students speak life, love, and truth into these girls was both beautiful and sobering. In that moment, I could clearly see the paths that could have been chosen…and the one Angely and Lissy choose.
They chose to pursue the Lord.
They chose to work hard.
They chose obedience, even when it wasn’t easy.
They chose to put their relationship with God first.
Their faithfulness mattered. It mattered for their own lives, and now it matters for the lives of others.
This story reminds us that discipleship is slow, holy work, and that God is incredibly faithful to finish what He starts. Seeds planted years ago are now bearing visible fruit. Prayers whispered over little girls are being answered in young women who are now leaders, examples, and light-bearers in their community.
Moments like this are why we keep going. They are reminders that the Kingdom work happening here is real, lasting, and generational. We are so grateful to witness what God is doing, and even more grateful to walk in it together.
With gratitude and hope,
